General Motors registers as power unit manufacturer

General Motors has today announced that it has formally registered with the FIA as a Formula 1 power unit manufacturer starting in the 2028 season.

"We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit," said GM President, Mark Reuss. "With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we're confident we'll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team. We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world."

Last month, the FIA approved Andretti's Expression of Interest application for Andretti Cadillac to race in the Formula One World Championship, though this has yet to be rubber stamped by F1 itself.

While accepting Andretti has yet to be agreed, and faces stiff opposition from F1 and the majority of the teams, a bid to lure GM into the sport without the American team solely as an engine supplier was rebuffed, with the manufacturer effectively saying that it entered with Andretti or not at all.

"We are proud the Andretti Cadillac partnership will make this possible," said Michael Andretti following the announcement. "Our commitment to excellence will not be taken lightly as we continue planning to enter F1 as soon as possible and, in 2028, Andretti Cadillac will compete as a true American works team.

"This historic partnership will accelerate the sport in the fast-growing U.S. market as well as globally," he added.

GM's development and testing of prototype technology is already underway. Engineering a F1 power unit will advance the American manufacturer's expertise in areas including electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, high efficiency internal combustion engines, advanced controls and software systems.

For more than a century, racing has provided a testbed for GM and Cadillac to transfer knowledge and technology between race cars and production vehicles. Cadillac's V-Series performance portfolio, celebrating its 20th anniversary, seamlessly incorporates learnings from the track to the road.

With a long history of racing success, Cadillac most recently developed the 5.5L DOHC V-8 powertrain used in the 2023 IMSA and WEC seasons. With this powertrain, Cadillac Racing secured a podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and swept top championship honours for the inaugural IMSA Grand Touring Prototype season.

"@Max Noble Once upon a time 2 Buick V8s were installed in the SR-71 start carts used to spin up the J58s before the low volatility jet fuel could be ignited with the aid of triethylborane, eventually just about every such engine in the US had been collected and worn out by the USAF.

Every time I hear about Cadillac in F1 I imagine a giant gin palace on wheels leaning into the corners and heading for the Armco."

"GM plan: 2026 new engine formula; let the the other teams build the first generation. Then hire some of those people who worked on the new engine formula to build your own. Enter in 2028 and bring up the rear. Looking forward, not."

"Let the politics commence! This will help keep us entertained in the racing off-season. Good work GM! Love your on the front foot approach… :-)
…not withstanding that a 1990’s Buick Le Sabre remains one of the worst cars I have ever driven. I returned it with less than 100 miles on the clock to the rental company and demanded something that at least approximated a car. After much protesting and general refusal to get back in the Buick they gave me a Cadillac. Which much to my surprise, other than having the handling of the Titanic… also had the comfort of the Titanic (pre-Iceberg). Only the Americans would make a front-wheel drive V8 of that size and power… and it fitted the country perfectly.

As long as Cadillac turns up on the grid, and not Buick, this could be a blast!

"@Mad Matt Renault re-badging deal has expired. On topic: I am looking forward to them being on the grid. They will bring their own fans and sponsors. Therefore it will also be a win-win situation for the FOM, although they are still putting up a hard time for the team to enter. Probably they wat to drive up the entry fee. Can't think of any other reason ...."

"I thought they were still re-badging the Renault but looks like @kenji is right. Let's hope this gets them past the final hurdle and into F1."

"2028? That is a eon in Formula One. Typical, of GM's strategic thinking though, which isn't great.

GM may enter when the current sugar-high F1 popularity wanes and falls back to Earth. I though it would be 2026."

"Perhaps this opens up an option for GM to put the Chevy badge on a customer team or two, and rivals Ford to do the same?"
