FIA reveals 6 Sprint venues for 2025

NEWS STORY
15/07/2024

The FIA has revealed the six venues that will host Sprint events next season.

Despite F1 seeking to increase the number of Sprints, as was the case in 2023 and again this year there will be just 6.

First introduced in 2021, there were originally 3 Sprints however it was only the following year that world championship points were awarded.

In 2023 the schedule was increased to six races, which has remained the case this year.

For 2025, five of the venues hosting Sprints this year continue to make up the schedule, the only change being that the Red Bull Ring is dropped in favour of Spa Francorchamps.

Silverstone hosted the first ever Sprint in 2021 as the sport sought to recover from the pandemic, whilst building on the success of Drive to Survive in attracting a whole new fan base.

Along with the British track, Monza and Interlagos also featured the 'mini races'.

Interlagos once again hosted a Sprint in 2022, along with Imola and the Red Bull Ring, the Brazilian track one of six to host the events in 2023, along with Baku, the Red Bull Ring, Spa, Qatar and COTA.

This year the return of F1, after an absence of three years, saw Shanghai host a Sprint, along with Miami, the Red Bull Ring, COTA, Brazil and Qatar.

Of the 15 Sprints held to date, Max Verstappen has won 10, with Valtteri Bottas the only driver to win more than one, the Finnish driver having won at Monza and Interlagos in 2021.

"@KKK...you're losing the thread. It's a SPRINT race with F1 cars and anyone who confuses that with a GP needs some medication and spectacles. That's how it's billed, as an added minor attraction to compliment a three day day motor racing event. Nothing more and nothing less. The advertising is the same irrespective of the events and it would appear that attendances on those weekends featuring a Sprint race are handsomely attended. You need to ask yourself a very serious question...Do the weekends that feature a Sprint race in any way affect the outcome of the F1GP racing on the Sunday? If the answer is Yes, then you may kindly enighten me of the details, conversely if the answer is No then I suggest that any further banter becomes, to a large extent, superfluous. As for your closing advice, well unlike POTUS, I never put the light out before 1.00am depite being four years older!!! "

"@kenji Totally disagree with you. Lets make another assumption, lets have a penalty shoot out before the main match, whoever scores the most gets a point. ITS A WASTE OF TIME. ITS NOT THE MATCH. The race is what its all about. Sprints are there not for points but extra advertising, wake up !"

"@KKK. With points on offer the Sprint becomes more than a mere sideshow and it becomes an important contributor to the overall WC's. With reduced [boring ] FP sessions it elevates the Sprint to being a foretaste of the full GP expectations with revised tactics and possible elements of surprise that makes far more interesting weekends....IMO. Knowing that there was any other race between F1 cars available to watch is enough for me to make absolutely certain that I don't miss it. There are good races and 'just so' races...either way I'm in there as a dedicated fan over a lifetime. "

"Thank you @kenji. They are pointless to me and a waste of engine life. F1 is about racing and nit sprinting. We leave that for when we run for a bus!"

"@KKK....Many thanks for the granting of your 'imprimatur' to those of us watching [and enjoying ] the evil sprints. I feel so relieved. Judging by your sprint negatives I trust that you'll resist any temptation at all to just take a sneak peek at the live broadcast and any possible check out of the playback/results. After all no one would be any the wiser if you did...By the way, they are not 'pointless'.....eight for the winner."

"Well you can watch them all by yourselves. They are a pointless exercise that no one wanted or cared less for them. Just dump the sprints please."
