BIOGRAPHY

Following a successful career in Brazilian and European karting, peaking with third place in the 2019 World Championship, Gabriel made his debut in formula cars in 2020.

The 15-year-old, representing the Brazilian academy of KTF Sports, raced in the prestigious Italian F4 Championship, among the most competitive in the world, using the technical structure of the Prema Power Team.

In his debut season Gabriel showed his talent with a victory, a second and a third place at Mugello and at the mythical Monza track accumulated another second and a third place following impressive recoveries.

In 2021, he contested the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA), previously known as European F3 and an almost mandatory step for drivers with pretensions to follow the path to F1, by means of FIA F3 and F2.

In his first year in the category, competing for the Fernando Alonso's team, Bortoleto gained two podiums and a lot experience.

In 2022, the Brazilian competed for the French team R-Ace GP, winners of the category in 2021. His debut took place at the end of January, when he participated in the F-Regional Asia, formerly F3 Asia, winning on his debut race at Yas Marina in Abu-Dhabi.

Still in the Middle East, in preparation for the European Championship, Gabriel competed in the Dubai race, accumulating another podium. In the FRECA he finished the year in sixth place, with two victories and pole position in the last stage of the year, Mugello as highlights.

In 2023, following the natural course of his career, Gabriel competed in the FIA F3 Championship, the category, which forma part of the programme at ten F1 World Championship events, opened the doors of the F1 Paddock to the Brazilian.

In a fantastic season he led the championship from the first weekend and became champion with a 45 point advantage over second place.

Due to his excellent results in F3, Gabriel was invited to participate in the McLaren F1 team's young driver programme from 2024, a season in which he contested the FIA F2 championship.

With 2 wins, 2 poles, 2 fastest laps and 8 podiums, Gabriel won the F1 title at the first attempt, finishing 22.5 points ahead of Isack Hadjar and 51.5 points ahead of third place Paul Aron.

In late 2022, Gabriel had announced that he had joined A14, Alonso's driver management company, and after winning the F3 title, and signing with McLaren's driver development programme, completed his first test in F1 machinery at the Red Bull Ring in September 2024, testing the MCL36.

Around the time that he completed this test, Sauber Motorsport COO and CTO, Mattia Binotto marked Gabriel as one of the contenders for a seat at Sauber in 2025, ahead of the Swiss team's takeover by Audi.

Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri both endorsed Gabriel to be selected, with the Australian sharing his experience of not getting a seat immediately after winning the 2021 F2 championship and hoping that the Brazilian would avoid a similar.

Released by McLaren in late 2024, over the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend, rumours emerged that Gabriel had signed a contract with Sauber for the 2025 season.

Sauber confirmed this on 6 November, announcing that the youngster would partner Nico Hulkenberg on a multi-year deal.

Gabriel therefore becomes the first F2 champion to be directly promoted to a racing seat in F1 since Mick Schumacher's promotion to Haas in 2021 after winning the 2020 Formula 2 championship.
