Independent study rates FIA governance below IOC and FIFA

NEWS STORY
02/12/2013

An independent audit of the FIA's governance system carried out by I Trust Sport shows that the FIA scores well in some areas but is also significantly failing in others, especially as regards financial transparency and reporting.

A comparison of the FIA's rating with similar studies of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) also reveals that the FIA governance achieves scores significantly below both of these major sports federations.

Commenting on the results David Ward said that, "It is disappointing that the FIA is rated below the IOC and FIFA given its responsibility for Formula One which together with the Olympics and the World Cup are the most popular sports in the world. The I Trust Sport report shows how relatively simple changes to the FIA's governance would transform its rating.

"Publishing annual financial accounts and the application of international accounting standards would, for example, bring the FIA much closer to the IOC and FIFA. I would strongly encourage all those interested in good governance to study the results of the I Trust Sport survey. Hopefully it will act as a catalyst for further reform so that the FIA may truly say that it meets world class standards of governance".

The I Trust Sport study, which uses an assessment tool developed by academics at IDHEAP, the Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration in Lausanne , was commissioned by David Ward who recently withdrew his candidacy from the 2013 FIA presidential election having been unsuccessful in securing sufficient nominations.
