BIOGRAPHY
While Michael Andretti, having enjoyed a less than illustrious career in F1, was determined to return to the sport as a constructor, from the outset it was clear that the sport's powers that be were not in favour.
To be clear, the opposition came from F1 itself, backed by the majority of the teams, while the FIA, under Mohammed ben Sulayem, was in favour of the American bid.
In early 2023, Andretti announced his partnership with General Motors (GM) in the form of Cadillac, and while the FIA was in favour, F1 vetoed the bid, insisting that an entry would only be considered if GM agreed to build its own engines.
Undaunted, Andretti continued with his plan, announcing a new facility in the UK, and using Toyota's windtunnel in German.
In late 2024, with the dispute between Andretti and F1 becoming increasingly hostile, and all in public, TWG Global Holdings, an American multinational conglomerate, and sponsor of Andretti Global, announced that it was taking over aspects of the team, and while Andretti remained an 'advisor', his legendary father, Mario, was promoted to the board of directors.
With Michael effectively out of the picture, F1 began to soften its stance as the team was renamed from Andretti Racing to Cadillac, and subsequently to TWG Cadillac Formula 1 Team Ltd.
Dan Towriss, founder, chief executive officer and president of Group 1001, a privately held insurance collective and financial services firm, was appointed CEO of TWG Motorsports, a subsidiary of TWG Global, in February 2025, having been given control of Andretti Global just a few months earlier by Michael Andretti.
The following month the team was given official approval for its entry in 2026, having paid the requisite entry fee, thought to be in the region of $500m.
"For the past year, we have worked hand in hand with GM to lay a robust foundation for an extraordinary Formula 1 entry,” said Towriss. “Now, with 2026 in our sights after today’s final approval from the FIA and Formula One Management, we’re accelerating our efforts — expanding our facilities, refining cutting-edge technologies, and continuing to assemble top-tier talent.”
“We’re thrilled the Cadillac team is official," added GM President Mark Reuss. “We’re incredibly grateful for the support from the FIA and Formula One Management leadership for us and for our collaboration with TWG. The excitement only grows as we get closer to showcasing GM’s engineering expertise on the prestigious global stage of F1.”
The team confirmed that since the bid to join F1 was announced in January 2023, TWG had assembled an experienced team of over 300 people working on aerodynamics, chassis and component development, software and vehicle dynamics simulation and that development work to join the grid in 2026 had continued at pace with operational wind-tunnel models, parts production and performance testing strongly underway.
The team confirmed operations in Indianapolis; Charlotte, North Carolina; Warren, Michigan and Silverstone, England.
With GM unable to supply an engine until around 2029, in the meantime the American outfit will use Ferrari power units.
In December 2024, former Virgin and Marussia CEO, Graeme Lowdon, was hired as team principal, while the team subsequently recruited Pat Symonds as chief technical officer, Rob White as operations officer, Nick Chester as technical director, Jon Tomlinson as chief aerodynamicist and former Ferrari race engineer, Xavi Marcos, as its chief race engineer.
Though keen to have an American on the grid in the form of Colton Herta, he didn't qualify for the mandatory superlicence. Consequently in 2025 he will drop IndyCar in favour of F2 in a bid to attain the necessary points.
In August 2025, veterans Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas were confirmed as the team's drivers for its debut season, with Guanyu Zhou subsequently named as reserve.
Other than being new to the sport, doubt over Cadillac’s initial competitiveness are its numerous facilities on both side of the Atlantic – not to mention the windtunnel in Germany – uncertainty over the Ferrari power unit, and the recruitment some of the aforementioned technical staff.
