Red Bull demos Halo device

NEWS STORY
12/07/2016

Red Bull, which has been developing its own Aeroscreen safety device in anticipation of the FIA introducing mandatory driver cockpit protection, has trialled the alternative Halo device at Silverstone this morning.

Gasly completed two laps with the Halo device fitted to the car at the beginning of this morning's session, the first time anyone, other than Ferrari has run with the device attached.

With the FIA admitting that it prefers the Halo, though still to decide if it will be introduced in 2017 or not, Red Bull has put development of the Aeroscreen on hold admitting that it has better use for its resources.

The Silverstone test, which sees all the teams bar Sauber in action, is also being used by Pirelli to test 2017 tyres, in terms of construction and compound, but in current 2016 dimensions.

Pascal Wehrlein is performing duties for the Italian manufacturer in a 2014 Mercedes W05.

"OMG, it look horrendous, are the FIA aesthetically retarded.

Yes it would stop a wheel from hitting the driver in the head, but what happens if the car turns over in a gravel trap like FA this year, it could snap off, the only way is up, in to the drivers head and shoulders.

If a race car turns over on a solid surface like the race track it will not scrub off any speed and the sparks will be hitting the driver in the face, they could make their way through the visor and in to a drivers eyes.

So for now let’s think of a worst case, it partially snaps off and pins the driver in the car by the shoulders if not his head and the car catches fire, they will be goners. In the case of JB in Japan this device would not have saved him and would have probably have reduce the little chance he did have of surviving.

At least the Auroscreen RB came up with didn’t change the aesthetics that much and make an F1 car look like the car Homer Simpson designed and killed off his brothers business, just like the FIA will do if this monstrosity is put on an F1 car.

In the FIA tests did the RB devise deflected a wheel as this is what we are talking about at the end of the day.

If a race car turned over fitted with the RB device fitted it would most likely have shattered off, yes the risk of parts hitting the driver would be still there but none of the other issues/risks.

Before you all have a go at me I’m not a Red Bull lover, but they do make the best looking F1 cars ??"
