Ferrari mechanic undergoes surgery

NEWS STORY

Francesco Cigarini, the Ferrari mechanic injured during yesterday's Bahrain Grand Prix, has undergone surgery.

Taking to Instagram, the Italian revealed: "Surgery ok. I have to thanks all the people worried for me. Nothing else, just a big thanks. Hugs!"

Cigarini suffered a double leg fracture in the incident during Kimi Raikkonen's pit stop for which the Italian team was subsequently fined 50,000 euros.

The Italian was in the process of removing the Finn's left-rear wheel when the all-clear was given for the driver to pull away, the car running over the hapless Italian's left leg in the process breaking the shinbone and fibula.

Following treatment at the circuit Cigarini was subsequently transferred to Bahrain's BDF Hospital, 20 minutes form the Sakhir circuit, where he underwent surgery late last night.

Raikkonen, a newcomer to social media, posted the message "get well soon mate", to his crew member's Instagram account.

Ferrari is currently investigating the incident, having suffered another unsafe release with the Finn's car on Friday.

Though Raikkonen retired in the aftermath of the incident, teammate Sebastian Vettel went on to win the race.

"Yes, I think this is a combination of timed/automatic lights and no "hold" option. Perhaps when the car pulls into the pitbox a timer is started but there must be a so called "lollipop operator" when he lets go of a suicide button the light stays red, he then can hit another "green light" button to complete the pit stop. This incident looked like a normal pace but no tire was changed and the crew man was injured from it. It looked like the car only moved two feet before it hit the pit crew member. Ouch!! FIA should add that there should be 1 second added to the end of each pit stop for safety, but then the crews would try to counter that by trimming the pit stop by that margin. Could you imagine a 1.5 sec pit stop? "

"Poor guy. That accident looked really nasty. They were saying on TV that it was just a busted fibular and tibia, but based on the direction his leg went in, I'm assuming there's knee damage too. Broken bones heel well; joints not so much :/"

"Blame it on the rear jack guy. He had to lower it after seeing both tires changed but he lowered it with only 1 tire changed."

"Another example of “high technology” gone haywire. When tire changes took five seconds, it was considered a miracle. Now anything more than two is too slow. I call BS. Now the driver is told when the dash light goes green you go. This the result. Stupid."
