Video: Simulation of Miami track

While the race has yet to be agreed by FOM and the definitive track layout confirmed, an enthusiast has put together a simulated lap of the Miami F1 track based on the layout issued by Miami City Commissioner, Ken Russell, earlier this month.

"This is a lap in the 2015 Ferrari on supersofts managing a 1:22," explains sim creator Jack Shepherd. "With the current F1 cars and drivers, plus the track rubbering in and ultrasofts, the lap times should be about the same as Canada I'd presume.

"I have thrown together an AI that is raceable and some track cameras for replays," he adds. The environment is gathered from Google's API with low quality buildings added and simple trees where trees and buildings would be, but not particularly accurate.

"The road surface even has bumps from where I've poorly joined track segments, but it is driveable and demonstrates the layout.

"Each street is exactly where the roads are paved in real life, however I have no idea where the FIA intend placing kerbs and barriers etc, so I can't know how close this layout would be to the actual circuit but it gives a gist of the speeds you'd expect to be involved.

"The bridge section is abysmal and boring and would be your typical DRS zone, but the rest of the circuit isn't too bad. It does feel a bit V8 supercar, not F1 though."

As Jack says, the bridge section in particular is uninspiring, especially in the wake of the bore that was Monaco. Furthermore, the length and width of the bridge must surely raise concerns in terms of safety, and how quickly emergency crews could be deployed in the event of an accident. As for Jack's own "bumps", which he fully explains, there have already been concerns raised over the expansion points on the bridge.

"That just looks so boring. It's an out an out engine power drag race circuit. Whoever puts out the most power will win and nothing to do with aero. I guess that's the American hot rod mentality of how fast it can do the quarter. Reminds me of a lot of the mickey mouse DTM circuits."

"Firstly, nice simulation, well done to Jack and Racedepartmant.com. This track just looks awful. Two tediously boring, (very,very,very) long straights and the only place I can see any passing taking place. So, after one car (using DRS) passes another on the first straight, we'll see the same passed car do the same to the car that its just been overtaken by on the second straight, so we're back to square one. Good for the stats though: two overtakes, but no places changed. "

"Having been involved with the first Miami GP (IMSA Camel GT) on the streets of Miami I see why Liberty wants to be there. It's the atmosphere of the location and the expected makeup of the attendees. It's understandable and probably fits the Liberty strategy. My concern is that when the Miami money backers see the projected cost of all that Armco and fencing, to say nothing of the repaving (lots of it), they will balk. Maybe Carlos Slim will come to the rescue. Of the suggested other sites (very well presented and interesting to see from the drivers' seats) only Road America, Watkins Glen and Sebring interest me. But none of those have that flavor, atmosphere, inherent excitement. RA and the Glen are out in the boondocks. Pretty countrysides for sure, but not interesting to high end excitement seekers. Plus, none of the three sites has hotel accommodations or convenient air connections to suit a GP. I know I'll get arguments on all those points, but I'm sure I know what Liberty is after and it's not all bad. My suggestions are the same as Liberty's: Miami, Las Vegas and New York. Austin will suffer if those three come to be. And, forget Indy and Daytona - all the wrong karma at those locations. Long Beach is a ghost from the past and Laguna will never be built to F1 specs - never, never, never. It's a county park and the park board hates the race track, as do all the housing developers and home owners in Monterey. "
