Official: Ferrari confirms two-year deal with Sainz

NEWS STORY
14/05/2020

Ferrari has announced that Carlos Sainz will drive for the team in 2021 and 2022 alongside Charles Leclerc.

The announcement came around thirty minutes after McLaren confirmed that the Spaniard is to be replaced by Daniel Ricciardo.

"I'm pleased to announce that Carlos will join Scuderia Ferrari as from the 2021 championship," said Mattia Binotto. "With five seasons already behind him, Carlos has proved to be very talented and has shown that he has the technical ability and the right attributes to make him an ideal fit with our family.

"We've embarked on a new cycle with the aim of getting back to the top in Formula 1. It will be a long journey, not without its difficulties, especially given the current financial and regulatory situation, which is undergoing a sudden change and will require this challenge to be tackled in a different way to the recent past.

"We believe that a driver pairing with the talent and personality of Charles and Carlos, the youngest in the past fifty years of the Scuderia, will be the best possible combination to help us reach the goals we have set ourselves."

"I am very happy that I will be driving for Scuderia Ferrari in 2021," said Sainz, "and I'm excited about my future with the team.

"I still have an important year ahead with McLaren and I'm really looking forward to going racing again with them this season."

Born in Madrid on 1st September 1994, Sainz already has plenty of Formula 1 experience, having taken part in 102 World Championship Grands Prix, over five seasons.

In 2019, he finished sixth in the Drivers' Championship, his best ever result, in a year when he also made it to a podium position for the first time, finishing third in Brazil.

"Ditto @Rock Doc
Sainz and McLaren are a very good match up.
Still, the lure of the red overall...
Alan Jones knew how to handle Ferrari, even when the old man himself ran it.
@F1Nerd, read the transcript into the hearing back in 2007 when McLaren owned up to having two people knowing that someone at Ferrari was sending information out and one at McLaren who had the 2007 Ferrari plans. It didn't go any deeper than that, however the fine and penalty was huge, and that mysterious loss of power in Brazil cost Hamilton a lot too.
You are right about Renault, that same year had CDs of information about McLaren's car and got left off.
McLaren don't have enough red on their car.
I wish Sainz well and hope he gets what he wants."

"Not sure why everyone thinks this is a good move. Sainz has been driving great recently and was lucky to get out of the Toro Rosso driver grinder to survive in F1. But Mclaren was the best fit for him. Ferrari will chew him up and spit him out.

This should have been Riccardo's seat. A proven winner and tough driver. Last of the late breaker and elbows out wide. That's what we wanted to see at Ferrari. I guess Leclerc had a say in team mate. Can't blame him for wanting to be the undisputed #1. "

"So now we have the confirmation on these two, Alonso back to Renault, seems the logical choice or any other thoughts out there."

"Well, the news is that Carlos wil got the opportunity to show is capabilities, not only to be quick but to battle for victories, witch is quite different things.

About cheating, I think we see this often in some video games. Whenever there are rules, there will be someone to break them. F1 has witnessed some decisions taken by some teams, which we can easily call shameful and unsportsmanlike decisions. We only know a few, in the past 40 years. But does anyone know how many were actually put in place, completely invisible to outsider eyes? I can't give every strange situation a cheat label, as teams are always trying to find a hole in the rules to give them an advantage. This is not cheating. Finding a rule hole or a void before anyone else is not only fair, but the top prize for the countless hours of work that technical teams consume. This is the main core of many sports. Ask a marathon runner if he would not prefer to use Nike Vaporfly, had they not been banned. Some of those advantages are find to be to much over the line and subsquentely ruled illegal. Should they need to be explicitly revealed? That's the point."

"Well done to Carlos, but will team orders prevail? You could do an Irvine an just rake in as much money as possible and hope for teammate retirements."

"@F1Nerd, Ferrari’s cheating over the years is legendary and sadly continues. The way they chew their drivers up and spit them out after thoroughly demoralising them is equal to their cheating. ALL teams for many many years have stretched or bent the rules but none come anywhere near the red team. For what it’s worth, I think Carlos is a great driver and a really nice guy, I truly hope he has success but......."
