Perez being shut out at Racing Point

NEWS STORY
24/09/2020

While it might be expected that Lance Stroll gets first dibs in terms of upgrades, it seems odd that Racing Point would already be leaving Sergio Perez out of the loop, unwilling to share information as the team battles for third in the team standings.

However, according to the Mexican, this is exactly what is happening, and he fears the lack of transparency could prove costly.

"We are focusing on the eight races ahead," he told reporters in Sochi today. "It's going to be crucial that we deliver every single point, it is very important for the constructors' championship.

"We still can have the best season in our history, if we manage to finish third," he continued. "And I think we're all going to be very disappointed if we don't get that third place in the constructors' championship.

"Obviously since the news came out, some people inside the team tend to hide things, which I don't think is great," he admitted. "I think at the moment we just have to be as transparent as possible to make sure we achieve our goals, and make sure that we score as many points as we possibly can."

For the second successive race the Mexican will not have access to the upgrade package that according to team boss, Otmar Szafnauer, is worth around three-tenths a lap.

"Given how close the grid is, a couple of tenths make a difference to your final result," said the Mexican. "I wish I had the upgrade this race, but for obvious reasons I won't have them. The team is working hard to try to give me the upgrade hopefully for next weekend."

"Perez's best bet at this point is probably to punch out of the F1 cockpit and head to IndyCars, WEC, or something like that.

Red Bull is the only top team that might take him. That is normally a team I'd caution any driver against going to, unless you are the next Vettle, or Verstappen. However, as a last gasp at a chance to win races and contend for a championship it might not be a bad deal for Perez. However, I see little for Red Bull to gain by dropping Albon.

Ferrari have their new wunderkind in LeClerc, and they just signed Sainz to replace Vettle. Mercedes won't drop anyone to take him. Bottas is at least marginally better, plus isn't going to play games to try to get into Hamilton's head like Rosberg did. Perez has shown a willingness to do that in the past.

I would see no advantage to Perez to go to the likes of Haas or Alpha Romeo. Spending a couple years toiling at the tail end of the pack in hopes of dragging that team up to where Racing Point is now doesn't benefit him particularly.

Nobody else has a worthwhile seat available right now. And Perez isn't enough better than the drivers those other teams have to justify dropping one to take him on. Except maybe at Williams, but Russell and Latifi are doing as well as can be expected with that car, so I doubt Perez would do meaningfully better."

"I think Perez will find it hard to find a seat in a competitive team even with the money he has behind him. His habit of regularly taking out his team mate in races (and others) probably has not endeared him to the majority of team owners.
I just get the feeling that the reason he is being "frozen out" now he is leaving, may be due to past antics. He is a quick driver there is no doubt but history shows when he is about to be beaten he resorts to unacceptable Senna type tactics to put it mildly. The word "grudge" springs to mind when talking about Perez and drivers he has had clashes with especially Ocon. What is his answer every time............I didn't see him !!!!!
Very sad if he doesn't get a seat as he is the only Mexican in F1 and has many loyal F1 fans but his capers on track must have an impact on Team Principal's thoughts about recruitment."
