Pirelli reveals cause of Baku tyre failures... sort of

Pirelli, in conjunction with the FIA, has completed the analysis of the left-rear tyres involved in the incidents that affected Lance Stroll and Max Verstappen during the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

This analysis also took in the tyres used by other cars in the race, which had the same or a higher number of laps on them compared to the ones that were damaged.

According to the Italian manufacturer, the process established that there was no production or quality defect on any of the tyres; nor was there any sign of fatigue or delamination.

The causes of the two left-rear tyre failures on the Aston Martin and Red Bull cars have been clearly identified. In each case, this was down to a circumferential break on the inner sidewall, which can be related to the running conditions of the tyre, in spite of the prescribed starting parameters (minimum pressure and maximum blanket temperature) having been followed.

As a result of this analysis, Pirelli have submitted their report to the FIA and the teams.

The FIA and Pirelli have agreed a new set of the protocols, including an upgraded technical directive already distributed, for monitoring operating conditions during a race weekend and they will consider any other appropriate actions.

"We have worked closely with Pirelli and the FIA during their investigation into Max's tyre failure on lap 47 of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix," said Red Bull in reaction to Pirelli's findings, "and can confirm that no car fault was found. We adhered to Pirelli's tyre parameters at all times and will continue to follow their guidance.

"We are grateful that following the weekend's high speed impacts no drivers were injured."

"I read elsewhere that the teams always push for as low a pressure setting as possible due to the performance gains it brings. The article said that teams had increased the heating in the tyre blankets in order to make the official tyre pressure reading meet what was required but then the tyres cool and the pressure goes down to a value the teams prefer. I believe the FIA then made a new rule to limit the temperature the tyre warming blankets could be set to so the teams couldn't get round the tyre pressure limits that way.

It seems the tyre pressure measurement are only taken at one point and the suspicion is that the teams have found a new way around the current measurements. I don't know if that is a factor in the problems for Max and Lance but it seems independent tyre monitoring was already planned for next year."

"So Pirelli are stating that they think that they know the reason for the twin disasters? Co incidences are strange things and it's my belief that this finding would attract long odds on a betting book. At the moment I'll go with the unproven premise that tyre pressures and temperatures were the most likely causes. If it was ever proved so then teams playing around with events like this where a fatality could easily occur need to be called to account."
