F1 to drop MGU-H as sport shifts focus to electrical power

NEWS STORY

The FIA has announced that the next generation of Formula One engine, due to be introduced in 2026, will witness a "shift of focus to electrical power".

Following the meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Paris, in validating the framework for the 2026 power unit regulations four key objectives were identified:

Powerful Environmental Message: 100% sustainable fuel, overall efficiency, and shift of focus to electrical power

Significant Cost Reduction: technical, operational and financial regulations

Newcomers: make it possible for them to join the sport at a competitive level

Protect the Show: powerful and high-revving power unit, car performance, sound, drivers’ ability to race, avoiding excessive differentiation

In order to achieve this, the 2026 power unit regulations will be built on four so-called pillars.

To retain the 1.6-litre V6 engine

To increase electrical power to 350kW

To eliminate the MGU-H

The introduction of a Power Unit cost cap

Along with its determination for a far more environmentally friendly sport, the FIA is seeking to attract new engine manufacturers, with the Volkswagen Group, which owns Audi and Porsche, having expressed particular interest and attended numerous meetings.

However, any decision on entering F1 would depend on costs - hence the proposed budget cap - and the sport moving to synthetic fuels by 2026.

A detailed document of the 2026 power unit regulations will be developed and submitted to the World Motor Sport Council in early 2022.

"The four pillars being proposed are both simplistic and eminently achievable in an overall sense. Why the scepticism?"

"Hmmmm sounds like the usual bureaucratic Newspeak to me. Lots of laudable goals\objectives, but I'm not sure there's actually any substance - that will, I presume, become aparrant as things shake out.

"Clockwork motors with a big key that turns around at the back of the car.
But no, that wouldn't be allowed because the key would constitute a moveable aerodynamic device!"

"@ Max Noble.....The green wokies have been somewhat thwarted thankfully and we will retain the much loved ICE, an exercise in modern engineering art especially when put alongside the meaningless lump of electric motor it is obvious which appeals the most. A V10 running at 20,000 +RPM faultlessly is a prime example. I'm all for new technology but there will always be room for the sights and sounds of an ICE being thrashed to within mm's/nanoseconds of destruction. Anyone not moved by that is not a red blooded passionate F1 loving human being."

"@Cobra Drive - Ah! The sight, and sound of a foot-pedalled Singer in full flight! Such a moment of beauty in motion! Imagine if we could have human powered machines that moved… oh wait…"
