Porpoising directive likely to be introduced at Silverstone

NEWS STORY
18/06/2022

The FIA has confirmed that the directive relating to porpoising will not be introduced this weekend but (more likely) at Silverstone.

Having announced on the eve of this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix that it was taking action, it was immediately assumed that the directive would be applied this weekend.

However, admitting that there is no magic fix, this weekend will be spent gathering data in the hope of introducing the directive at Silverstone next month.

Before any further action can be taken, a metric must first be established, this being the mandated limit for vertical movement of the car which if exceeded would mean compulsory raising of the ride height.

Following the issuing of the directive on Thursday, it was assumed the metric would be introduced this weekend, but instead FIA officials will be gathering data for its introduction, possibly at Silverstone.

"The technical directive does not specifically state that the metric would be applied for this race," said an FIA spokesperson, according to The Race.

"It is felt that the complexity of establishing that metric from all the data from the different cars is not going to be an overnight job.

"There will be a careful and full analysis of the data gathered this weekend and any application of it will be appropriate to whatever arises from the analysis."

Along with the porpoising phenomenon, which continued to plague a number of drivers as the Canadian Grand Prix weekend got underway, there are also complaints about the stiffness of certain cars.

However, due to the bumpy nature of the Montreal track it is entirely possible that some of the bouncing being witnessed is due to the track as opposed to the cars.

"Rumour has it that the airbox mounted cameras will be replaced with standardised FIA issued Ross Brawn bobble-head. The metric indicating an unsafe condition is reached when the head detaches from said bobble-head. The offending vehicle is then black flagged and removed from competition."

"According to some reports the teams were forewarned about the possibility of 'ground effect porpoursing' and the chance to alter the ride heights was voted down! The very basic of basic analayses indicates that some teams have done a superb job in understanding the aero physics. That being the case then the FIA should butt right out and leave Mercedes et al to sort this problem out for themselves. Failure to provide a safe car should then attract a black flag. Simple solution."

"FIA's decision to go back to Ground Effect cars was clearly taken without any conception or care for how difficult these lardy new cars would be to get working properly. The ability to "follow closer" has overridden any other consideration and hasn't noticeably improved either the Sport or the Spectacle.

Just a reminder (alluded to by Mr Noble elsewhere) that last time around with Ground Effect cars teams had lots of opportunity for real-world testing to dial-out their nastiest characteristics."

"@ max Noble.... as the patient stated, when asked by his psychiatrist whether he had problems making decisions...to which he answered .'well. yes and no'."

"In other news FIA confirm breathing oxygen may, may-not, or might, be possibly related to continuing function as a carbon based life form. Or not. Possibly. May-be. An FIA spoke-person would not intimate if they would confirm deny, agree, disagree, or refuse to acknowledge if someone else within the FIA had, or had not said anything.
Someone who may, or may not, be in the FIA may, or may not, have stated that Alice Through the Looking Glass, and croquet with Flamingoes, was based more in reality than FIA decision making…
