Canada GP: Race team notes - McLaren

NEWS STORY
19/06/2022

Daniel Ricciardo: "Unfortunately, not the best Sunday for us. We simply didn't have the pace, and then had to manage a few other things as well. That was tough, it just put us too far out of contention. So, otherwise, we've got to have a look, see where we can go better, and then just clean a few things up."

Lando Norris: "We were unlucky today in many places, and also just didn't have the pace to race and overtake the people we wanted to race against. It was very difficult to overtake in general and that hurt our pace. We simply couldn't get into the positions we wanted to be in. I think the pace wasn't too bad, still not good enough, but not too bad, just the fact we couldn't overtake, hurt us badly today. We've got work to do. There were mistakes from my side, mistakes from the team's behalf and we'll just need to step back, refresh, go again and do a much better job in the next one."

Andreas Seidl, Team Principal: "A very disappointing Sunday afternoon for us here in Montreal. It's been a tough weekend in general, with the car lacking pace, having reliability issues and suffering an operational issue in the double-shuffle pitstop during the Virtual Safety Car period. We have to acknowledge our competitors did a better job and therefore we didn't deserve points today.

"We didn't give Lando or Daniel the package they deserved today, so we have to offer them an apology. My thanks to our team here at the track, back in the factory and our colleagues at HPP for their efforts over the whole of this long-haul double-header. We also have to use this as an opportunity to learn, and come back stronger in two weeks for our home race at Silverstone."

"Yes rather disappointing, nil points but we know both Lando and Daniel did their best with what they had."

"Both cars seemed slow in a straight line. Daniel mentioned an issue he had to manage and the coverage I was watching said Lando was forced to use an old engine with the power turned down after the issues he had in qualifying.... then there was the pit-stop which didn't work out well for either of them.

Not the best of weekends for them and not the best of races as a whole... apart from the last laps after the safety car."

"Yup tough weekend.
Track certainly doesn't suit the car (possibly gear ratios?) and it certainly doesn't perform well in a DRS train - not quick enough in the drag from the slow corners to the DRS zone to overtake or stay out of the clutches of slicker cars. I'm sure they tried to optimise the aero and cooling to gain some top speed but they seemed to offer the consequences.
Delaying Ricciardo 4 seconds in the pits - enough to come out behind the p8-p10 DRS train (and Lando even longer) ensured zero points."

"Terribly disappointed in McLaren here in Montreal. It appears that Ricciardo is now beginning to get the car set up and performance closer to something that he can push with more confidence. Then along comes Montreal and it all seems to vanish. This current car is being monstered by lesser teams and that is not good. If McLaren are going to hold down fourth in the constructers they are going to have to give their drivers better more competetive cars. The car must improve otherwise forget any challenges this year...The Renault/Honda/Ferrari engines are simply the best ATM. So much expectation for so little results.... "
