Ricciardo remains "committed" to McLaren

NEWS STORY
15/07/2022

As speculation mounts, Daniel Ricciardo has taken to social media to insist that he remains committed to McLaren until the end of 2023.

"There have been a lot of rumours around my future in Formula 1, but I want you to hear it from me," Ricciardo posted on social media this morning. "I am committed to McLaren until the end of next year and am not walking away from the sport.

"Appreciate it hasn't always been easy, but who wants easy! I'm working my ass off with the team to make improvements and get the car right and back to the front where it belongs.

"I still want this more than ever. See you in Le Castellet. Daniel."

The message comes after Colton Herta completed a two-day test with the Woking team, which has also announced the addition of 2021 IndyCar champion, Alex Palou to it driver "roster", though it fails to reveal precisely what the Spaniard will be driving.

Ever since Zak Brown claimed that Ricciardo hasn't lived up to expectations, speculation has intensified over the Australian's future, and though the American has since played down his comment, and even said that Ricciardo will race for the team in 2023, these latest events don't help the situation.

Indeed, this morning's message, which was clearly in reaction to the recent events, came from Ricciardo's own social media account and not McLaren's.

Ricciardo might remain committed to McLaren, but is McLaren committed to him?

"@ Liam111...Thank you for your very [ rare ] kindly comments, much appreciated. Yes, the first option would severely test my accountant's nerves ! and the second option means that I might just find myself up before the Stewards and receiving a penalty. At my age 'stop and go' penalties are daily occurrences hahaha. Thanks again my friend."

"@Kenji- I love you and am your biggest fan. Here in the states we drive on the "right" side of the street and every car I've driven in 40+ years have always had the turn signals on the left hand side. Some early German cars had the horn on a d^&n stick, whatever.

I offer two solutions for you my friend. One has significant costs, the other is entirely free.

1. Move to the US where they have standards for these types of features on all vehicles.
2. Why warn the poor fool in the other lane that you are coming over- just take that hole while you can before they close the gap. Problem solved. "

"@ oilburner

The word committed is in quotes because that is the EXACT word that Daniel Ricciardo used - we are quoting him, hence using quote marks.

You, on the other hand, are using single quote marks, or inverted commas, which one would use if, for example, one was suggesting something... please don't look for something that isn't there."

"Why is the word 'committed' in quotes in your header?"

"The problems that Ricciardo is experiencing are quite perplexing..to say the least! I have absolutely no doubt about the intensive research effort that is being undertaken by Ricciardo himself and McLaren, to try and find a solution. I'm sure that there are numerous differences between PU's and that alone would be far easier to solve than where the current problems apparently lie. It has been acknowledged that McLaren cars conform, to a degree, with McLaren's design philosophy and that the previous cars were difficult to manage, It was hoped that the 'clean sheet for '22 ' would be more neutral but apparently not, as Norris has recently acknowledged. This then has placed more emphssis on Ricciardo's ability to adapt, this being the third time that he's had to relearn/reset his driving style and techniques across a broad number of areas. One very insignificant factor helps me to sympathise with Ricciardo's predicament. I recently bought an Asian manufactured/designed car which has the indicator stalks placement reversed from the German cars I have driven for the last 40 plus years. At times when a sudden need to use the indicators arise I automatically turn the wipers on!!! Slower reactions are no problem it's only when quick decisions are needed that I revert to the older ingrained practice. Small issues at high speeds can become bigger issues at high speeds. Stick with it Daniel you have a great fan base willing you every success. "

"The only thing I can think of: Daniel had success with the Renault power unit package at Red Bull and at Renault itself. Maybe the Mercedes power unit is different in delivery. Grasping at straws here, but maybe there are differences."

"I doubt it's a problem with Daniel's specific chassis/car as he was suffering last year too and the car is completely new for this year.

I'm also not sure it's just a really bad car as Carlos managed OK the year he was with Lando and I read that the car didn't change that much in characteristics between then and when Daniel first joined.

It seems to me that last year it just drove in a way that Daniel found hard to get on with. This year's car may still have some characteristics he finds difficult but on the other hand he seems a bit closer to Lando at some races so perhaps some progress... or perhaps just progress on his side.

Either way, I don't think there's any reason to drop a driver of his calibre, better to keep him and work on the car.

I believe they share data by the way, I seem to remember seeing a few clips on TV where they talked about it... but I could be wrong :-) "

"Its a real shame cos in a good car, Ricciardo is mega. Shame the car is a bucket of S**te and all efforts are towards Norris, I doubt anyone else in that car will do any better. Certainly not anyone with no F1 experience. McLaren will be worse without him"

"I expect to see news of his sacking (at least from the F1 seat, possible he swaps seats with Herta) any day now. Whether he sees out the season or is replaced immediately is the only real question. Be a shame to lose the perma-smile from the grid."
