CRB finds in favour of McLaren

NEWS STORY
02/09/2022

The Contract Recognition Board has found in favour of McLaren's contract, thereby giving the green light to driver for the Woking outfit in 2023.

The CRB consists of four persons, each having a different nationality, and four alternate members, all of whom being qualified lawyers of international standing and experience and with suitable experience in contract law.

The Board is appointed by the current President of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce.

Here follows the decision of the Contract Recognition Board in relation to a dispute between the BWT Alpine F1 Team and the McLaren F1 Team regarding the driver Oscar Piastri:

A Tribunal appointed by the Contract Recognition Board held a meeting on 29 August 2022 when counsel for Alpine Racing Limited, McLaren Racing Limited and Mr Oscar Piastri were heard. The Tribunal has issued a Unanimous Decision that the only Contract to be recognised by the Board is the Contract between McLaren Racing Limited and Mr Piastri dated 4 July 2022 (The day after the British GP - Ed). Mr Piastri is entitled to drive for McLaren Racing Limited for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

The members of the Tribunal comprised Ian Hunter QC presiding, Prof. Klaus Peter Berger, Matthieu de Boisseson and Stefano Azzali.

"BWT Alpine F1 Team thanks the Contract Recognition Board (CRB) for convening on Monday and we acknowledge the decision they have made," said the French team in reaction to the decision.

"We consider the matter closed on our side and will announce our full 2023 driver line-up in due course."

"Our immediate focus is the Dutch Grand Prix and securing points in our fight for fourth in the Constructors’ Championship."

"Furthermore to my previous comment. If they can’t even get their contract department in order what hope do they ever have of winning races - let alone a championship.
They are light years behind Ferrari, that’s before you even get to the likes of Red Bull and Mercedes.
How long before Renault pull the plug?
Again.

"@ClarkwasGod - We don't know what was going on behind the scenes. Possible that if we did we'd understand why he's chosen to race for McLaren instead of Alpine. Perhaps he feels poorly treated in some respect. perhaps he's just grubbing for money or has no appreciation for the opportunities Alpine has given. We will probably never know the full true story."

"This is a huge monumental eff up from Alpine and they know it. The fact they are pointing fingers at their outgoing investment as lacking integrity shows how desperate they are, goodness knows how many tens of millions they have lost - and I suspect will never ever recoup. They must be the laughing stock of the paddock. Contractually the outcome was never in any doubt.
The bigger story here is what they did to annoy Alonso in the first place whose behaviour instigated the whole procedure."

"Interesting date for the contract.

McLaren had already decided to ditch Ricciardo back then. I guess they figured it would not be such an issue if Piastri was being lent out to another team to pull him into McLaren. It was then the Alonso switch after Vettel's surprise retirement that brought it out into the open and caught Alpine on the wrong foot without a solid contract behind them."

"Loyalty may be in the eye of the beholder.... or at least we've only heard Alpine's view of what they felt he had committed to. Perhaps he did verbally commit to things he hasn't delivered... or perhaps not but either way I'm fairly sure Alpine wouldn't have hesitated to drop him if they thought they could put a "better" driver in their car."

"Irrespective of the decision, Piastri has done himself no favours with his singular lack of loyalty (but who will remember that, or even care?).

It'll be "interesting" should the '23 Alpine be a better/faster car than next year's McLaren"
