Vettel gets Suzuka buzzing

NEWS STORY
21/09/2023

Sebastian Vettel enlists the help of F1 drivers and team bosses as he launches his Buzzin' Corner campaign at Suzuka.

"We all know one insect is very famous, and it's the bee," explained the four-time world champion in a video on Instagram.

"The bee is yellow and black, and it's the perfect ambassador for us around this project," he added. "The idea is to highlight the importance of biodiversity because it stands not just for the bee but for all the other insects.

So, we use the bee as our ambassador," he continued, "and she will help us to hopefully stress this very powerful message.

A ceremony was subsequently attended by drivers and team bosses at Turn 2, the German's favourite corner on a track where he enjoyed victory four times, and whose kerb has been painted yellow and black.

Eleven 'insect hotels' have been placed around the opening section of the iconic circuit where it is hoped bees and other insects will seek refuge.

"It is nice to be back in Suzuka," said the German, "and hopefully this is just the beginning of an initiative and projects around the world leading to more yellow and black kerbs at race tracks and more habitat and space for insects.

"We have to celebrate variety, not just in human beings but also in nature, and we have to protect it. That's really close to my heart and that's what I want to stress here and raise awareness now."

"As much as this inspires good comedy, I am sorry to say that Vettel has completely lost it, being a multimillionaire with too much free time to burn, although many others seem to manage that same condition a lot better and a lot more constructively without any need to harass their fellow man (is it allowed to use the word "man" anymore?!). This "project" would normally have no place outside of a kindergarten or elementary school classroom at most. I am amazed that people offer him their time and more, for such nonsense. Let's hope that next time he will not be lecturing us about transsexual bees, or glueing himself on the pitlane as a protest against fossil fuels. Cheers"

"As much as I love Vettel, is putting a herd of bees (a flock?) into a corner of a soon-to-be active race course the best idea? Perhaps it could wait until Monday, so none of the drivers get stung, and none of the bees get run over?"
