In a lengthy statement, issued 13 minutes after Mercedes own press release, Ferrari confirms that Lewis Hamilton will drive for the Scuderia from 2025.

"Scuderia Ferrari is pleased to announce that Lewis Hamilton will be joining the team in 2025, on a multi-year contract," reads the statement.

And, er... that's it.

In all honesty, one only has to check out the Peroni Nastro Azzurro website to see that the intended move was hidden in plain sight when the Italian beer brand announced its partnership with the Maranello outfit earlier this week.

Even before the move was made official, speculation over the seven-time world champion heading to Maranello was enough to see Ferrari's share price rise almost 9%, around 5 billion euros in increased in market capitalisation.

"I can't wait for the close of the 2024 season where Max beats Lewis by a hair in the Championship, followed by George beating them both in '25, with Charles finishing ahead of Lewis after making a classic "I'm so stupid" Charles crash which keeps him ahead of Lewis as well.

"@kenji - maybe Hamilton plans to emulate his mentor, Niki Lauda? Lauda won the championship for Ferrari in his final year with the team, before the switch to Brabham.

I doubt Mercedes thinks $41 million on gardening leave will be a good investment. And I’m sure Hamilton’s contract wouldn’t allow Mercedes to make him sit out a season. He’d probably be able to sue for his salary and move to another team if they tried that move.

"As I suggested elsewhere, I think Hamilton must have a decent idea of Ferrari's likely performance and that he is betting it's at least equal to Mercedes'. Having said that its still one hell of a gamble, though undoubtedly a very lucrative one. Unless things have changed radically at Maranello, I think he'll find the politicking internecine blame culture hard to adjust to: that's more Alonso's forte....
I wonder what will happen if the 2024 Mercedes pulls off the near impossible task of being competitive with RBR.....?

Such considerations aside, let's hope that by 2025 Ferrari are sufficiently close to RBR for Ferrari's "Dream Team" of Hamilton & Leclerc to give Verstappen a run for our money."

"I do find it strange that Mercedes are willing to race all year with a driver who has changed his allegiance 100%. Despite all the driver's utterances stating otherwise, every move will be scrutinised and tested. The team will be under pressure to ensure total secrecy vis a vis their 2026 challenger placing further strain on resources in a season which will be very much an indication of a Mercedes fight back and what that means for the future. Unpalatable as it may seem surely some consideration should be made to put Hamilton out on gardening leave. Wolff was stiffed by his No.1 and the timing is extremely telling. Being announced so late leaves MB well and truly on the back foot. That being the case, Wolff should cobble together a deal for this season with either Lawson or Doohan and see where that leads! Looks like Ferrari’s 2023 sales, plus forecasts for 2024 - and the rumours about Hamilton - all came together to create a lot of investor confidence yesterday. Ferrari certainly seems to be a brand on the ascendant. Let’s hope the momentum lifts the Scuderia’s performance and we see the red cars regularly challenging for wins. 3 or 4 teams capable of regularly taking wins would liven things up. "

"Fantastic news, congratulations to both Ferrari and Hamilton! Personally, I am no fan of Sir Lewis outside the car, but I greatly appreciate him as an outstanding driver, no question about it. Great career move as well, regardless of eventually winning another world championship or not. And apparently, Ferrari has already amortized the investment and made a heap of money (valuation) on top. John Elkann and Piero Ferrari must be ecstatic :) Well done, Fred Vasseur. Toto must have been feeling quite smug after blocking Andretti, but I imagine not feeling too smug now. By the way, blocking Andretti has been a disgrace, they should all be ashamed of themselves. Their justifications were laughable. In fact, given that the name of the game is money, if a new (11th or even 12th) team is not competitive they simply do not get any money (only the first ten teams get to share in the earnings), therefore Andretti would not pose any threat (according to what all the other teams and Liberty/F1 are claiming regarding their perceived low level of competitiveness). Or would they?! Incidentally, Andretti have a SPAC with over $200 million (according to SEC filings) standing by for quite a while now, earmarked for the F1 venture. Therefore, we certainly have not seen the end of it yet. They could buy a team "tomorrow", even at a billion dollar valuation."
