Newey reported to have submitted resignation

NEWS STORY
30/04/2024

Unconfirmed reports claim that Adrian Newey has officially submitted his resignation to Red Bull, with talk of confirmation from the Austrian team before this weekend's Miami Grand Prix.

As has been the case with so much of this sorry saga, the current speculation surrounds a report in the German media, however, while Auto Motor und Sport is regarded as a reliable news source, its information is coming from sources who may well have their own agenda.

It was Auto Motor und Sport that last week reported that Newey was to leave the team - the design guru said to be unhappy at the ongoing Horner and how it has been handled - which in turn led to speculation over where he might be heading.

As has been the case throughout, nobody is saying anything on the record, then again, and what isn't helping the situation, nobody is denying anything, other than statements that amount to just a dozen or so words that don't really tell us anything.

Official confirmation of the situation is expected before this weekend's Miami Grand Prix, but then again in the days running up to the season opener in Bahrain we were told that the Horner situation was soon to be resolved.

While this might be manna for the likes of Drive to Survive, it is not a good look for the sport, and demonstrates yet again that the paddock now features an atmosphere far more toxic than anything witnessed during the days of the infamous Piranha Club.

"I think this boils down to several factors:
* whether or not Newey fancies a "challenge" (and gamble) of taking a mid-field team like AM to the top?
* does he want to work with Wolff (reportedly not)?
* does he want to go to Ferrari work with Lewis & aim to triumph with F1's "biggest name"?
* will he simply retire from full-time F1 after the brilliance of the RB20?
* other unrelated factors of which we know nothing.....

All this stuff i still mere speculation until Newey makes an announcement.
One thing's for sure - no matter how much speculation there is in both the "serious" Motorsport press & tabloid sh1t-stirrers Newey will announce his plans & we can all shoot the breeze about actual motor racing (or maybe not....)

"@BrightonCorgi - Vittorio Jano was still designing engines for Ferrari in his 70’s… so Adrian could continue for another decade yet if the fancy takes him (…and noting “genetics allowing”).

"01-May-1994. Ayrton Senna passes at the wheel of a Newey design. As today is the 30th anniversary of tha tragic day I’m sure nothing will emerge today on this topic… The sunsets… the sunrises…. If we are going to get a clear statement from anyone it could well be Thursday, or Friday this week.

In years to come these events will be looked upon as the ones which killed Red Bull’s winning streak. They shot themselves in both feet… sad.

"@BrightonCorgi. I think you are right. Lots of ink spilled over this. One of the articles intimated that Newey had already decided to leave Red Bull early this year, before the butt fondling episode.
A normal change of pace, not disgust with Horner grabbing an underlings butt makes way more sense to me.

I really, really doubt Newey is going to another team on a full-time basis. My synthesis of all the ink spilled, "

"@BrightonCorgi - not impossible, but seems unlikely. I'd kind of like to see him retire just because it seems like a cheat code for teams to employ him. When he was designing for Williams they dominated. When he was designing for McLaren they dominated. When he has been designing for RBR, they dominated except when their engines were too far behind. Heck, when he worked on CART design, those cars dominated.

That said, if he still enjoys the sport, why retire? Some people, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Newey was one, thrive on work and keep on doing it as long as they physically can. Plus, he's making boatloads of money. And Ferrari, or AMR, or Merc would probably pay him every penny he wasn't too embarrassed to ask for, and even some of those he was too embarrassed to ask for."

"Well, since the actual racing isn't very exciting, at least we can be entertained by the off track drama surrounding the teams."

"Any chance he'll just retire?"
