Newey joins Aston Martin

NEWS STORY
10/09/2024

Adrian Newey has joined Aston Martin as team as Managing Technical Partner and shareholder.

The British design legend, whose cars have won 12 drivers' and 13 constructors' titles for Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull, will begin working at the team's Silverstone HQ from 1 March 2025 taking up a new role as Managing Technical Partner.

The appointment of Newey, who was widely tipped to join Ferrari, is a clear statement of Aston Martin's ambitions.

Ready for something new in Formula One, Newey sees Aston Martin as the ideal project to apply his guidance and creativity. A private tour of the team's brand-new Technology Campus in June, a tangible demonstration of the team's limitless ambition, proved a decisive factor in the decision-making process.

There is plenty to exercise Newey's mind in his new role: a reset in the technical rules for 2026, the integration of Honda works power units, advanced fuels by Aramco, and the newest wind tunnel in the sport.

"This is huge news," said Lawrence Stroll. "Adrian is the best in the world at what he does - he is at the top of his game - and I am incredibly proud that he is joining the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team.

"It's the biggest story since the Aston Martin name returned to the sport and another demonstration of our ambition to build a Formula One team capable of fighting for world championships. As soon as Adrian became available, we knew we had to make it happen.

"Our initial conversations confirmed that there was a shared desire to collaborate in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Adrian is a racer and one of the most competitive people I have ever met. When he saw what we have built at Silverstone - our incredible AMR Technology Campus, the talented group of people we have assembled and the latest wind tunnel in the sport - he quickly understood what we are trying to achieve.

"We mean business - and so does he. Adrian shares our hunger and ambition, he believes in this project, and he will help us write the next chapter in Aston Martin Aramco's Formula One story."

"I am thrilled to be joining Aston Martin," added Newey. "I have been hugely inspired and impressed by the passion and commitment that Lawrence brings to everything he is involved with.

"Lawrence is determined to create a world-beating team. He is the only majority team owner who is actively engaged in the sport. His commitment is demonstrated in the development of the new AMR Technology Campus and wind tunnel at Silverstone, which are not only state of the art but have a layout that creates a great environment to work in.

"Together with great partners like Honda and Aramco, they have all the key pieces of infrastructure needed to make Aston Martin a world championship-winning team and I am very much looking forward to helping reach that goal."

"@Spindoctor - Max going to AM in '26 sounds very likely. Perhaps AML wants to increase their sports car programs? Alonso would be great to bring them a Lemans victory if he needs to step aside for Max."

"There are some F1 followers who believe that Stroll jnr can win a WDC....good luck with that. My gut feel predicated on past performances indicate that a result of that magnitude is highly unlikely. No matter how good the car is, if you don't have a complimentary driver, able to extract the max from what he's got under him, the prime targets will not come easliy...if at all. "

"@BrightonCorgi If AM have managed to lure Newey's "team" from RBR I expect it will cause ructions, not to mention causing RBR even more headaches.
What's the betting Alonso retires at the end of 2025 & VMax signs-on in his stead...."

"@Celtic Tiger - It's tough the get people to move to Maranello. Especially if they have a family and don't speak Italian. Always been difficult for them to hire a primarily British talent base for engineering etc.

Alonso has been around the development for the '24 and '25 car, so it should suit him to a degree. His criticism has been more that Aston Martin hasn't been able to keep the development pace up.

The cars started off good. "

" I would have liked to see him at Ferrari but in a way I get why he wouldn't. What makes Ferrari, Ferrari is also what hurts them. Having said that, Newey is probably their best bet at the moment for a course correction on the development side. I would predict that most of the 2025 car is already built so we won't see much at first but come mid season development we'll see some Newey ingenuity. 2026 will be the year they come out swinging.

However, ultimately, I feel that Newey is going to be wasted at AM so long as all efforts point to the "help my lame-duck son win". I mean, Alonso is great at getting the most out of a car that doesn't suit him but how long can he be in an environment where his side of the bread isn't buttered?

Well, good luck to them nonetheless."

"It's more than a singular hire. I'd expect Newey to bring a small team of engineers and like along with him."

"Call me a cynic (I try!) but I'm not convinced that Newey can drag AM to the front of the grid straight away. I know nothing of his setup at RBR, but would expect his particular (peculiar) style of car-design depends on a small coherent team who work well together.

Notwithstanding all that I wish them well!"

"Something like what happened with David Sanchez and McLaren can happen, right? They already had Bell, Fallows , Cardile, now Newey and Cowell will join...too many cooks."

"As Ceaser would pronounce, “Let the Games begin!” - yup now we have a real sporting situation. Lawrence Stroll *really* wants to win. Damn he really is going to take to the big guys…. Love it!
Alonso for a third world title in 2026, and Lance in 2027. Read it here first…"
