Italian Grand Prix: Qualifying team notes - Ferrari

FP3: Both Charles and Lewis ran Medium tyres for most of the session, only fitting Softs in the last 10 minutes.

Both drivers ran the track-specific rear wing brought to this race. On his last lap Charles set the second fastest time exploiting a tow from Esteban Ocon. The whole field was within less than 1 second and many drivers made little mistakes at turn one, making it clear that the key to a good qualifying would be a clean lap.

Q1: Charles and Lewis went into qualifying with five sets of new Softs each. They ran two sets of them in this phase, but aborted their second runs as they had already set quick enough times to make the cut to Q2.

Q2: There was a slight delay to the start of this session while gravel, thrown up onto the track by some cars was cleaned away. For their first run both Scuderia drivers fitted the tyres used on their earlier aborted run. They then used a second set to make the cut to Q3.

Q3: Both drivers set their fastest time at their first attempt, unable to improve on the second run. In a tightly fought qualifying Charles was 4th fastest while Lewis qualified 5th but tomorrow, he has a five place grid penalty imposed at the Dutch GP so will start from P10.

Charles Leclerc: I'm very happy with my lap in Q3 and P4 was the maximum result we could extract from our car today. We had a really good race here last year, so I'll do my best to reproduce that, not just because standing on the podium in Monza is an incredible feeling, but also for our tifosi who have given us so much support around the track all weekend. It's going to be very tough to do, and so far, Red Bull and McLaren have had the upper hand, but we will give our all to make something special happen in the race.

Lewis Hamilton: It's been a positive weekend overall and, without the penalty, today's result would have been satisfying. The team has worked tirelessly and the tifosi have made every day so special with their energy, which has been pushing me on even more.

Starting from P10 won't be easy and strategy will be key, but we've shown good pace over the long runs and this is a track where overtaking is possible. We'll work hard tonight and hopefully deliver a result that makes the tifosi proud.

Fred Vasseur: Fourth on the grid turned out to be a good place to start last year, but today we did not do it on purpose! You can always think you had the potential to do better but it was so, so close, so tight between P1 and P15. I am happy with the way the team has worked so far this weekend. We knew that a key factor this afternoon was to prepare the tyres well on the out lap and this was more important than getting one car to give the other a tow. So we take this P4 and see what we can do, knowing that our long run pace was good yesterday. It's a very long run down to turn 1, so let's see where we are after that in what is a long race, where tyre degradation will be a factor. Lewis will have to start P10 but he has similar pace to Charles. We have good top speed because we have been quite aggressive in our choice of downforce level, but as usual in Monza you have to decide on the compromise between being quick on the straights or through the corners. Tomorrow, everything is still possible.
