"Oscar is only human," says manager Webber

Former F1 driver Robert Doornbos reveals Mark Webber's reaction following Oscar Piastri's first lap crash in Baku.

Having endure a nightmare qualifying session on Saturday, Piastri's weekend got a whole lot worse when he first jumped the start and then crashed out just a few corners later.

"Certainly not my finest at the moment," he admitted. "A silly, simple error. I just misjudged the grip level, I didn't anticipate the dirty air in the way I should have, and yeah, clearly went into the corner way too hot and that was that.

"I'm not blaming it on anything other than myself," he added. "I just didn't make the judgement calls that I needed to at the right time and that's obviously just part of it."

Talking to Ziggo Sport, Doornbos, who contested 11 grands prix for Minardi and Red Bull between 2005 and 2006, revealed that in a test message exchange with Piastri's manager, Mark Webber, the Australian said that Piastri is only human.

"I was texting with his manager," said the Dutchman. "He said Oscar is only human.

"Let's not forget he doesn't have a lot of experience compared to, say, Max Verstappen," he added.

Doornbos, who subsequently raced in Champ Car and IndyCar, believes that Piastri's Baku misery was related to the events at Monza two weeks earlier.

"It's striking this happened just after Monza, where there was a bit of friction," he said. "Piastri had to give away six points to Norris because he had a slow pitstop. That was a strange situation."

Indeed, the Dutchman fears that further pitstop issues in Baku will only increase the pressure all round.

"There is danger," he said. "McLaren makes so many mistakes, both with the drivers and during pitstops. That's astonishing.

"If Max wins everything, and Piastri always finishes third, Max wins the title," he warned. "It's possible... in 2013 Sebastian Vettel won the last nine races for Red Bull and became champion.

"Anything is possible, Abu Dhabi has seen crazier finales."

Indeed it has Robert, indeed it has.

"I had the exact same feeling/sentiment when I saw Oscar's crash on the opening lap.

It took me back to a time when our Chairman found an error in a legal document. i exclaimed but we submitted this to Roland (our in house lawyer) to proof! The Chairman uttered "All this proves is that Roland is fallible".

I had such a high opinion of Oscar that I was stunned at the crash- and then a thought- all this proves is that Oscar is fallible."
