Sainz confident of Mercedes new engine

Ahead of the rules overhaul, Carlos Sainz admits that the Mercedes engine was one of the most significant factors in signing for Williams.

Since the hybrid formula was first introduced in 2014, and upgraded in 2022, Mercedes powered cars have won 138 (56.1%) of the 246 grands prix held. Honda has won 68 (27.6%), Ferrari 24 (9.8%) and Renault 16 (6.5%), the last of which was a one-off in 2021.

While Max Verstappen is still helping Honda to increase its tally, the fact is that Mercedes domination is likely to continue.

Indeed, speaking to El Partidazo de COPE, Sainz admits that the Mercedes power unit was one of the big draws when it came to signing for Williams after being dumped by Ferrari.

"It's actually one of the main reasons I chose Williams for this new regulation change," says the Spaniard. "I knew we'd be running the Mercedes power unit, and everything I've heard about it has been positive, and still is."

However, other than Mercedes itself, and back-to-back world champions McLaren, Alpine will also be using the German engines.

"That's four teams, eight cars, with the same engine," says Sainz, "and two of those teams, especially McLaren, are superior right now.

"So, no matter how good the engine is, you still need to get everything right with the chassis," he admits. "And of course, Aston Martin with Honda will be competitive, and Ferrari will always be there. Ferrari are always in the fight."

"It's interesting in the paddock because no one knows," admits James Vowles, according to Crash.net.

"That's just the facts behind it," he continues. "Mercedes have always done well with regulation changes, because they get ahead of the curve, they forward invest ahead of the curve. There's no doubt about that.

"But the reality behind it is we don't know what Ferrari have got, or what Honda have got," he admits. "It's just a complete unknown at this point in time.

"So, I'm really pleased with the work that we say these have done with the preparation and their development, but until the lights go out in Australia, no one knows."
