Norris facing repercussions for Singapore clash

NEWS STORY
17/10/2025

Held "accountable" for the first lap clash with teammate Oscar Piastri in Singapore, Lando Norris admits that he faces "repercussions".

In the moments after the incident, Piastri claimed that he had been forced towards the barriers and while the race stewards had effectively cleared the move as a race incident, McLaren insisted that the Briton was merely seeking to avoid clashing with Max Verstappen.

Piastri wasn't happy and made his feelings clear. "That's not fair," he said over the radio. "Sorry, that's not fair. If he has to avoid another car by crashing into his teammate, that's a pretty s*** job of avoiding."

Another botched pit-stop didn't help and forced to follow Norris home in fourth, Piastri appeared to cut off the radio call when team boss Zak Brown tried to celebrate the team having won the constructors' title at race end.

Since then McLaren has clearly carried out a further investigation of the incident, and speaking to the media in Austin Norris revealed that he has been found accountable.

"The team held me accountable for what happened, which I think is fair," he told reporters. "We made progress from there on understanding what the repercussions were for myself, to avoid anything worse happening than what did."

The Briton added more flesh to the bones when speaking to Sky Sports, admitting: "Things were reviewed and there are and will be repercussions for me until the end of the season.

"The rule is to not crash with each other," he continued. "This wasn't a crash, it was something much smaller, but we still don't even want to get it to that point because it causes these kind of things, and that's never a good thing.

"We and the team want to avoid those kind of things happening again. Simply for the reason there was contact between two McLaren cars.

"Zak and Andrea don't want that to happen, and I think as teammates, we don't want that to happen. So of course, that's the reason for why I was held accountable. It has consequences."

When asked what those consequences might entail, Piastri said: "That's for the team to know.

"Lando's taken responsibility, and so has the team. I think it's quite clear for us as a team that how Lap 1 unfolded wasn't how we want to go racing."

"While I agree with your statement Geeza1966, let's not forget that McLaren is manipulating the race results.
When they stop doing that, we'll all be able to concentrate on the driving."

"Well well well.... In this over sanitized, and well over scrutinized world in which we live, F1 is now, more than ever, far too keen to concentrate on everything that is nothing to do with the actual job at hand.... As much as I still love F1 after over 40 years of watching, reading and studying our sport, can we please focus on the driving and not the drama??? Can you imagine what Alan Jones, Mansell, Prost & Senna et al would have had to say to the press/media etc if pressed on the "handbags at dawn" situation that has developed between Oscar & Lando??? The statement would have consisted of 2 words... The first starting with an F and the second ending in one... Come on lads... Grow a pair each and lets get down to some balls to the wall bloody racing instead of the boring politics of he did this so I will do that.... Let the best man win."

"Repercussions for him until the end of the season? What would those be? An extra hour in the sim? His PlayStation boxed away? Really, what can be done? They've practically taken six points from Piastri and handed them to Norris. So, unless Zak has H.G.Well's time machine amongst his car collection I don't see what they can do at this point.
Due to McLaren mismanagement the damage is done and Oscar now knows who really has the buttered side of the bread. I doubt it will be at Prost/Senna level but I expect some fireworks when those two are sharing the same piece of tarmac going forward. Let's see who draws blood first this weekend."

"@Chester you're more forgiving than me, I see McLaren trying to avoid more negative press and belatedly offering up some 'vague concessions' to reduce the heat. McLaren have so far intervened four times to penalise Piastri's performances this year. One report has even stated that Brown said at the beginning of the season that we were entering the 'Lando Norris era', believe it or not? The so called pay back that Norris has alluded to is being hidden...now why would that be? According to Norris McLaren have deemed him to be at fault in Singapore but Norris still took three very valuable points away from Piastri who will most likely face a major challenge from not only Norris but Verstappen as well. As i have said in another thread....too little too late. Singapore has done two things, narrowed the difference in points to both Norris and Verstappen, and in doing so heaped even more stress onto Piastri. Nice one McLaren."

"The drivers championship is still wide open for any of the top three drivers in the standings to win it. For the time being it's not Oscar's to lose, although he does have a clear advantage. Not "running into each other" is a relative concept. Under particular circumstances, anyone of the two McLaren drivers could for example run into a -third- driver who then crashes into the other McLaren driver. That's pretty much what almost happened at the last race (although Lando "just to make sure" run into both Max and Oscar :) There are many ways to force an opponent without necessarily running into them. And it was once called "racecraft" before this protracted political correctness era. The constructors championship has already been won; just let them RACE, I say. No rules needed any more."

"When Max swoops in to take the title it is nice to know that someone will be held accountable. That will be of little consolation to Oscar at the end of the season. What is Lando going to do? Write him an IOU for a WDC?"

"That's not Norris getting his elbows out...that's Norris out of control, hitting Max and then Piastri. Norris is desperate to regain the lead at any cost and that includes barging into Piastri. He's been watching too many Grosjean replays....."

"FFS - OP "puts his elbows out" all the time. Lando doesn't and gets criticised - then he does and then gets this."
