Sainz penalised

NEWS STORY

Carlos Sainz has been handed a 5-place grid penalty for the Mexican Grand Prix.

The Williams driver was summoned by the COTA stewards following his collision with Kimi Antonelli in today's United States Grand Prix.

Sainz attempted an inside overtake at Turn 15 and a collision between the two cars occurred at the apex. The Williams driver maintained that he had expected Antonelli to leave him space at the apex but the Italian turned in early and Sainz locked brakes when it became clear that a collision was unavoidable.

The Spaniard suggested that the Mercedes driver ought to have anticipated an overtake attempt and left space to avoid contact. However, at no point prior to the apex was the front axle of the Williams alongside or ahead of the mirror of the Mercedes.

Therefore, according to the Driving Standards Guidelines, Sainz had not earned a right to be left space at the apex.

The stewards therefore determined that Sainz was predominantly to blame for the collision and a penalty was applied accordingly. As the driver to be penalized did not finish the race a grid penalty equalling a 10 seconds time penalty was imposed.

Consequently, Sainz will drop 5 grid positions in Mexico next weekend and receives 2 penalty points meaning a total of 4 for the 12-month period.

"Sainz wasn't even close... again. So happy for him on Saturday, as were the huge estatic Austin crowd, and then this. One step forward, two steps back. Teammate Albon was nonexistent this weekend, sad to see.

C'mon Carlos, drive like a multi GP winner and not making more mistakes than some of this year's rookies. These mistakes cost the team more than the ridiculous carbon parts bill. "
