McLaren removes Norris' repercussions threat

NEWS STORY

Despite further controversy in Austin, McLaren appears to have removed the threat of repercussions for Lando Norris.

Depending on who you listen to the first lap clash in the Sprint which eliminated both McLaren drivers was down to Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris, Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso or Danica Patrick.

However, speaking in Mexico today, the Australian appeared to accept responsibility, whilst revealing that the threat of repercussions hanging over Norris since Singapore has been lifted.

The exact nature of the repercussions was never revealed though it has been claimed that it related to pit stop strategy calls.

"We've gone through it again," said Piastri of the clash, "we go through every weekend regardless of what's happened.

"There is a degree of responsibility from my side on the Sprint," he added, "and we're starting this weekend on a clean slate for both of us. Just going out and racing and see who can come out on top."

Asked whether that "clean slate" referred to the threat of repercussions for his teammate, Piastri replied: "Yes, the consequences on Lando's side have been removed."

Asked if the Woking team's reluctance to throw its weight behind one driver and instead maintain the so-called papaya rules added the pressure, Piastri said: Not necessarily, no.

"I think for us, it's pretty clear what those rules are, which is don't crash into each other," he continued.

"But I think regardless of what scenario you're in, that's kind of how you're expected to race as team-mates. I don't think that adds any pressure into the scenario."

"So, theoretically, Oscar will suffer one weekend of 'repercussions' to match the one weekend that Lando suffered? "
